On Tuesday, 27-8-2013, the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck (EKKW) used POLYAS to fire the starting shot for the future of church democracy. With the push of a button the prelate of the Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck, Marita Natt, commenced the online election.

The Landeskirche Kurhessen-Waldeck is the first organisation to offer its members an online vote of this size along with voting by post and in person. During the church committee elections, all members of the congregation of the Landeskirche are called to cast their ballots. In all, 800,000 members in around 1,200 municipalities are able to elect their church representatives.
